America as 1930s Germany?

Is U.S. like Germany of the '30s?

Andrew Greeley writes in the Chicago Sun Times comparing the US to Germany in the 30s. This is a comparison I have heard before and blogged about before and it is quite apt, I think. He talks about American generosity of days gone by like the Berlin Airlift and calls on America to return to those days. The best quote is his last as it echoes what I have been thinking about the Administration's criticisms of Kerry:

The strongest criticism that the administration levels at Sen. John Kerry is that he changes his mind. In fact, instead of a president who claims an infallibility that exceeds that of the pope, America would be much better off with a president who, like John F. Kennedy, is honest enough to admit mistakes and secure enough to change his mind.
