Early in April,
when baseball season first started, Ann noticed that the Red Sox
were giving away six commemorative pins to celebrate 100 years of
Red Sox baseball. We decided to go to all six games where these
pins were being given away to collect two sets, one for Jack and
one for Baby 2.0 (whoever and whenever that may be). And, along
the way, we had a little
magic as well.
Pin #5 was the
toughest to get. Rox had just arrived to babysit for us and we headed
out to the car around 6:00 with plenty of time to get to the park
before the 7:05PM start. We turned on the local sports station to
hear the pregame show and found out that the game started at 6:05
that night, not 7:05. Oops. We drove as fast as we could, parked,
got the subway, and ran almost all the way to the park. We got there
to find out that all pins had long since run out (it was the third
inning when we arrived). We nearly lost it. After so many months,
to not finish was too horrible a thought. After running from gate
to gate hoping to find anyone giving out just a few more we finally
ended up at customer service. I told the man in the booth that we
were collecting for our son and was there anything he could do.
He handed me two pins from his shirt pocket.
Sure, they're
cheesy. And sure they're probably worth spit. It was a project and
we finished it. And if we raise Jack right and he's a Red Sox fan,
he will be glad we did.
